Post Sale Update: This XL500S sold for $2,950 after 37 bids on eBay in Augusta, Georgia.

Introduced in 1979, the XL500S was marketed by Honda as “The New King Single”, saying that it was “the civilized big single…with more spirit than anything in its class.” Cycle World seemed to agree, calling it “the best there is” and the closest they had seen to the “perfect on-off road machine”, though they noted that it wasn’t easy to start and the 23″ front wheel didn’t make for quick turn-in.

Any flaws were seemingly forgiven for Cycle World because of the “wonderful motor”, a 32 horsepower 497cc four-stroke single that returned 50 miles per gallon. It had class-leading suspension travel, 10.2″ of ground clearance, and the federal requirements so that you could enjoy it on the street or trail.

This example (VIN: PD01-5101949) was “mechanically refreshed” in 2018-2019 and then given a “cosmetic refresh” last month with new paint and decals. The mechanical work included new tubes and tires, chain, shocks, seat cover, rebuilt carb, cleaning of the tank, lots of new cables, and the removal of the smog equipment. It’s got a new AGM battery and the sale includes the original handlebars, accessory front fender, and some original parts like the smog equipment and pegs. The original ignition switch was replaced and is no longer with the bike – you’ll need to rekey the fork lock and helmet lock if you want them to match the ignition. I like this listing because the seller is letting it go with no reserve – let’s see what it gets up to!
