Post Sale Update: After 25 bids on eBay, this TZR sold for $6,056.
Built between 1986 and 1996, Yamaha’s TZR250 was pricey for a 250 but it could compete with much bigger bikes on the track. It was based on Yamaha’s TZ250 race bike and both machines evolved together.
The ’94 model featured a 249.7cc counterbalanced V-Twin two-stroke that produced 45 horsepower – the factory racer put out approximately double. From a 1992 review in Cycle World: “No, the TZR250R will not break any speed records or set blazing quarter-mile times; but when it comes down to consuming corners, nothing currently in any manufacturer’s U.S. lineup even comes close.” For more on the TZR series, check out this profile from Yamaha. which alludes to the excellent handling and connection to the factory race bikes.
This example has just 1,604 miles and is said to be in very nice mechanical condition. There’s a few minor cosmetic issues – the left rear cowl has two cracks, and some paint on the rims is peeling off. The seller planned on restoring it when he bought it but he “never got around to it.” He says that you just need to clean it up, remove the corrosion, and install a new left rear cowl and it will look great again. The original windscreen is included with the sale and it’s currently titled in Utah.
