Post Sale Update: After 70 bids on eBay, this KTM sold for $3,000.
The seller says that 5 years ago he asked the editor of Dirt Rider magazine what the “best off-road bike was” and the answer he was given was a two-stroke KTM 300. The editor expressed a popular opinion – many experience off-road riders consider this to be the best option for aggressive riding, and they’re a popular option for Hard Enduro competitors. The seller took his time to find this example used, but now he’s letting it go with no reserve.
For more information on the XC-W, check out this article on Dirt Rider. In that story, Karel Kramer says “The KTM 300 is my favorite two-stroke of all time, and the ’07 is better than ever. I like to call the 300 a three-stroke, since the engine has such a smooth, strong and tractable delivery. It combines the best of four-stroke tractability and the instant zip of a two-stroke.” The XC-W gets a wide-ratio 5 speed transmission to complement the two-stroke single-cylinder motor. The “W” bikes look the same as the MX-styled XC models but they get gearing and suspension that are suited for a broader set of tasks, as opposed to strictly moto session duty.
This example has only been ridden approximately twice a year. During his ownership, the suspension was serviced and a few goodies were installed, including V-Force reeds and a FMF exhaust. Despite the lack of lights, it is titled for on-road operation in Colorado.
