In 1979, Honda introduced the “Custom” version of their unusual CX500. It was a common move at the time for the Japanese – release a “Custom” or “Special” version of a standard to expand the product portfolio and create a mild cruiser to appeal to American tastes. The CX500 Custom got a narrower tank and buckhorn bars, as well as different placement of the turn signals and a few “Custom” stickers on the sidecovers. The CX500 would last until 1982 – the following year Honda replaced it with the CX650.
Basic specifications of the CX500 included a 497cc V-Twin (Honda’s first V-Twin) that produced 48 horsepower, a top speed of 106 miles per hour, a dry weight of 441 pounds, and of course: the inclusion of ComStar wheels. The CX500 was the first production bike to run tubeless tires.
This example (VIN: PC012015526) has 19,156 miles but the cosmetic condition does not seem to reflect that – with the exception of a scratch on the left side of the fuel tank. That’s because it has been in storage for the last 38 years. The seller has had the bike for the last 3.5 years and he says it’s almost entirely original. He has recently replaced the tires and the speedometer cable.
