Petersen Museum Veteran – 1918 Harley Davidson 8-Valve Board Track Racer Replica

In America, Race by AbhiLeave a Comment

Harley-Davidson introduced the 8-Valve 1,000cc V-Twin to the public in 1916 because the Federation of American Motorcyclists required that models used in competition had to be offered to the public. So at a time when top of the line motorcycles cost about $350, Harley charged $1,490! In some enthusiast circles, the 90-mph 8-Valve was the greatest motorcycle to ever be made by H-D. I’ve seen production estimates between 10 and 50, which is why replicas like this exist. Still, it stands out thanks to many original parts and a 15 year tour of duty at the Petersen Museum before the museum was renovated.

This example was built over 25 years ago with a original bottom end stuffed into a Chadwell board track racing frame. The front end and gas tank are original, so it’s definitely a step up from the replicas that I’ve seen sell in the $30-$40k range. I have no idea what an original 8 Valve would set you back, assuming you could even find one. Paging Paul d’Orleans! Either way, you have to see this video from Buzz Kanter at American Iron Magazine, who estimates an original would cost over $1M and then gives you the joy of hearing what these bikes are like. It’s awesome:
