I went for a little ride this weekend and saw some fun stuff – come check it out!
There were four of us together to start the morning, leaving from the Iconic Motorbikes shop:
– Cory (our transport manager) on his Yamaha FZR400RR. He acquired it two years ago but it’s taken him a bit of time to get it put together so this would be his first long ride with it.
– Jay on his BMW HP2 Megamoto (which is for sale)
– Chris on his KTM 1290 Super Adventure R
– and yours truly, on my Tesi!
Here’s a little sound check of all four before we took off:
A few people always meet up at a specific gas station on Sunday morning before heading to the Rock Store, so we stopped there to top off our tanks. A couple of gentlemen came over to ask me about the Bimota as they had never seen a Tesi in the flesh. I enjoyed showing them the bike but I noticed that they both had some gorgeous Alfa Romeo GTVs so I asked them to show me their cars. One was stock and one was modified, plus a buddy of theirs later showed up in a DeTomaso Pantera:
Check out the engine (and the Weber sidedrafts) of the modified one:
We got to the Rock Store and it was in the 40s, which means we were all cold! Most of the guys got coffee, but I don’t drink it (which comes up in this Motorcyclist magazine story) so I got some hot chocolate to warm my hands and soul.
After I could feel my extremities again, I walked outside to check out what people had brought to the Rock Store that morning. Here are some highlights:
Not really sure what’s going on here but it made me laugh so you’re going to have to see it, too:
I’m not really sure what’s going on here either, but at least it’s motorcycling-related:
To me, the most interesting bike at the Rock Store that morning wasn’t one that would normally catch my eye. But when this BMW F650GS Dakar pulled up, I couldn’t help but notice the luggage set up of an OEM trunk with an OEM tank bag secured on top of it. I had a sense that I should check the bike up closer, and I was well-rewarded. The owner (named Pierre) bought the bike new in 2002, he’s got roughly 40k miles on it. But what made this interesting to me was the modifications Pierre had done – including some “period correct” farkles like a night vision camera and a Sony Handycam (take that, GoPro)!
I wanted to get some more miles in before heading home to Vy so the group (joined by Nathan and a few other friends) headed west to Point Mugu. On the way back we encountered a bit of a straightaway so I pulled over and had everyone do flybys to hear some exhaust sounds:
That’s all I’ve got for now, but I’ll leave you with a random memory that Facebook reminded me of – here’s me 12 years ago today on my old BMW R1100S before someone totaled it by driving into it when I had it parked on the street. I miss this bike and would love to get another one back. It’s the same one I took down the Baja Peninsula for New Year’s and came back with Vy on.
May you all get plenty of riding in this week as well!
