While researching the Don Vesco Cafe Royal bodywork of the recently-featured CB400F, I ended up getting sucked into the world of aftermarket fairings. One of the most interesting stories I stumbled upon was that of Matt Guzzetta, a business partner of Vesco in the 70s and 80s, who at one point went from San Diego, California to Daytona Beach, Florida on just one “tank” of gas on a modified Suzuki GN125.
Alright, so the 2 gallon tank of the Suzuki was supplemented by a 10.4 gallon ‘reserve’ tank, but still! Long story short, Matt (followed by a team from Motorcyclist magazine that was covering the trip) ended up covering 2,451 miles, using 11.38 gallons in the process. Let me save you the effort of getting your calculator – that’s 215 miles per gallon, even with traffic, stops, and getting pulled over by cops who wanted a photo.
Enough of the summary – just follow this link to get the full story (with plenty of pictures) from Ed Youngblood’s MotoHistory.
