A while back I shared that LEGO and Yamaha were parterning up for a new Technic model for the Yamaha MT-10SP. I guess someone at Yamaha noticed and they kindly sent me one to put together. Come check it out!
It took me a couple of months before Vy and I had the chance to crack this open, but we ended up finishing the kit over the course of a few weeks.
Packaging
This is a LEGO Technic kit – Technic was created back in 1977, at the time it was named the “Expert Builder” line-up. Per LEGO, “the purpose of LEGO® Technic is to build advanced models using a different building style than brick-based LEGO® sets. Technic sets use specialized pieces, sometimes including motors and pneumatic elements, to create much more functionality than you can get with regular bricks.”
The finished model is 17.5 inches long and 9.5 inches tall. It’s comprised of a hefty 1,478 pieces.
It’s also a rare situation where you actually need to read the manual.
Assembly
Vy and I built this together – she handled the organization of all the parts and I put the model together. Is it the start of a dinosaur or a MT-10?
chain assemble,d lots of colors!
The LEGO model features a functional 3-speed transmission (with neutral). The transmission was my favorite part of the Lego BMW M1000RR kit and it ended up being the same case with the Yamaha.
I took a few photos of the gear actuation because I thought it was very cool but I realized that it made a lot more sense to just film it as a video instead of sharing a whole bunch of still images. Weirdly, this has become my popular post on Instagram:
I ended up filming a second video of the transmission after most of the bike was built because once everything was done you wouldn’t be able to see the inner workings any more:
I also want to give some props to Lego themselves. As Vy and I finished up the model we realized that a piece was missing (I assume that I lost it as opposed to a situation where Lego forgot to pack it). The company makes it super easy in a situation like this – they have a website you can go to request the “missing” part and I got it within a week or so.
The Finished Product
And, here you go!The dash is done with a sticker.
More stickers for the logos, plus you can see a bit of the shift drum peeking out.
Now I’ve got to find a Lego Akrapovic exhaust…
Compare the face with the photo below:
I’m currently moving my office at Iconic so the model isn’t on my desk. Temporarily, I’ve put all of the LEGO motorcycle models that Vy and I have built on a TV stand until I’m done with my move. The LEGO MT-10 SP model is great fun to build and it’s a fantastic gift for someone that happens to own the real thing themselves. Hope you enjoyed!
Want one for yourself? You can buy it here for $239.99 directly from Lego.
Disclosure: if it wasn’t clear from the opening paragraph, I was provided this kit for free.
