Don’t get too excited – this isn’t an original Police motorcycle. Still, it does has a background in public service, because the WLA was by far the most common motorcycle that Harley-Davidson produced for the military. Harley took the WL (W was one of Harley’s model lines, L signified the high compression engine) and then added an A for Army – changes included different paint, blackout lights, smaller fenders, oil bath cleaners, and lots of accessories to help with the rugged requirements of wartime. Harley benefited greatly from their military service, as many servicemen came back from the war wanting a bike like the ones he rode or saw during wartime.
This bike (Engine #: WLA21747) is a little bit different, as at some point it was “restored into a New Orleans Highway Patrol Bike.” As part of that process, it was given a police pack, which includes the reds and blues and the siren. The odometer shows 148 miles but no information is given on how long ago the restoration was done.
