Oriignally purchased from Barnes Harley-Davidson in Tampa, Florida, this shovelhead police bike is claimed to have served as a Florida Sheriff’s vehicle and it’s now been restored to its former service glory.
The Shovelhead was introduced in 1966 and the powerplant that would last until 1984 when Harley introduced the Evolution. The “Electra Glide” name on the fender signified that this bike had an electric starter which was introduced only a year prior. Cycle World was impressed with the Shovel FLH, saying “In its field – high-speed, long-distance touring – the Electra Glide is without equal…the Harley-Davidson 74 V-twin is one of the finest motorcycle engines ever built, not because it is revolutionary or unusual, but because it is the product of years of thoughtful, careful, conscientious development”. That also made it a popular mount for police departments.
This example is claimed to have been restored to a 100-point standard, though the seller notes that the radio does not work. “There are no aftermarket parts installed except the plastic windshield and the original gas tank has been repainted.” The engine and transmission have been rebuilt by different individuals and the bike has been in storage for the last seven years – no gas has been put in the tanks so one may assume that it will need some fettling before it’s a rider again.
