Post Sale Update: The bidding ended at $8,100, but as you can see from the comments below there’s some questions about this listing. In addition, the listing itself has been pulled off of eBay, so I wouldn’t factor this in if you’re trying to determine the value of a T120TT…
Typically when I’ve seen or featured T120TTs in the past, they sell around $14/15k. This one is at $6,800 with just a couple of days left and the reserve has already been met. The seller doesn’t mention that this is a TT Special anywhere in the listing, so do they not know what they have or am I exhibiting some wishful thinking?
Ignoring that it looks just like a TT Special, the VIN on this bike is T120TT DU45854, which should indicate that it is one of the 900 T120TTs built between 1963 and 1967 due to a push from Triumph’s US West Coast distributor, Johnson Motors, for a bike that could be sold to TT Steeplechase racers. It was a 650cc race bike straight from the dealership floor and it was only available in the US. Thanks to high compression pistons, a hotter cam, and upgraded ignition, the TT produced 54 horsepower and pushed them through a close-ratio 4-speed transmission. The speedo, lights, and fork lock were removed, helping to take out 30 pounds from the base T120. Total weight was about 350 pounds. The fuel tank contained 2.5 gallons and was based on the Bonneville unit. For more information on this rare model, check out this site dedicated to the different ‘Specials’ that Triumph exported to the US.
This example comes with some extra parts so that you could turn it into a street bike if you wish. It was recently given a service and everything is said to run “perfectly.” Triumph experts – what am I missing here?
