Post Listing Update: The BIN was lowered to $3,250, but that wasn’t enough to attract a buyer for this Magna.

As the 80s rolled around, Japanese manufacturers were looking to find new ways to keep their customers and gain new ones. Honda started that change in 1982 by releasing a brand-new engine, a four-cylinder engine positioned in a 90° V. It was implemented in their new cruising model, the Magna, and their new sport bike, the Sabre. One year later, a stronger version of the 750 cc V4 was released with the 1,100 cc V65. That V65 was utilized in the new Magna in 1983, and adapted to the Sabre in 1984.

In the process, Honda created a new category of bike: the power cruiser. For the first time, Japanese makers, represented by Honda, started playing in Harley-Davidson’s field with high power, laid back motorcycles. One of their initial TV ads showed the Magna on a drag strip, letting you know that the V4 produced no less than 116hp, and yielded a top speed of around 135mph – the thing was fast. Weighing around 618lbs wet, it was good in straight line and potentially more than a handful in curves if your speed was too high. With a majority of the weight located on the back, the thin and light front wheel was not always adapted to the power of the rear wheel which could result in vague steering. Still, the press considered that the 1,100cc performance was stunning and a serious reason to put one in your garage. Read more about the V65 Magna here on Motorcycle Classics.
