Post Sale Update: This EL hill climber sold for $51,211 after 41 bids on eBay in Grant, Florida.

Wayne Lyle Cody was a successful privateer racer out of Council Bluffs, Iowa back in the 1950s. His former hill climbing Harley EL sat in his shed for 50 years, and it’s now available in fully functional condition. The history of the bike is great, but what really makes this stand out is how much the sale includes to back it all up.

First, the bike: it’s been highly modified to compete in hill climbs, which is why the 1,200cc motor has lightened flywheels, hi-comp pistons, reground cam, a wet sump oiling system, and Wico chain drive mag. In addition, the transmission only has 3rd and 4th gear, operated with a right hand lever and left foot clutch.

What I really adore are all the included pieces in the sale (check out the listing for photos). They include 2 of Lyle’s jerseys, his leathers, his helmet, digital copies of dozens of photos, original blueprints of the Wico mag instructions, a spare set of ’40 cases, letters of correspondence with Harley-Davidson and the AMA, and plenty more. It would make an amazing part of a collection that’s on public display.
