Affectionately known as the Yellow Peril, the Norton Commando Production Racer was a street-legal factory racer available to privateer racers. The cost was fairly staggering – at a time when a Austin Mini would cost you $1,500, you’d need another $400 to get your hands on a Production Racer. Because of this, replicas were not uncommon. Here’s a recent build that started with a MkIII Commando.
This Commando is a 850 Mk3 adorned in Production Racer bodywork, with an additional polished alloy tank for good measure. The front fender is a fiberglass JPN unit. Other extras include adjustable Tomaselli clipons, and a fairing mount that allows for more steering lock (though the original mount is included). Though the odometer shows over 12k miles, the engine and transmission have less than 3k miles on then since the build was completed. The engine was bored .020 over and it has a mild port. Fueling was handled by Mikuni 34mm carbs and exhaust gases exited through Conti replica mufflers made by Bub. The owner built this bike himself but he can’t handle the riding position anymore. An electric start will help keep your knee fresh.
