Post Sale Update: This 750 Sport sold for $40,100 after 60 bids on eBay.
This bike sat for over three decades because the original owner’s wife said “it’s me or the bike”. He tried to get the best of both worlds by putting it in storage and pretending he sold it.
In the seller’s words:
“I purchased this bike years ago from the original owner with a interesting history. He purchased it new from the West Coast Ducati distributor ZDS in 1974. Having a true superbike of its day it wasn’t long until he racked up several speeding tickets ultimately loosing his license. Not willing to stop riding his all time favorite motorcycle he eventually ended up getting arrested and going to jail. On the way home from getting bailed out by his wife she gives him the ultimatum “the bike goes or I go”. He loved his wife but he also loved his Ducati. Telling her he would sell his beloved Ducati to save there marriage but secretly putting it into storage. The bike stayed in storage for 30+ years until I acquired it.”
The 748cc V-Twin was good for 62 horsepower, enough to power the 402 pound (dry) bike up to 124 miles per hour. 1974 was the third year of production for Ducati’s attempt to fight against the larger bikes coming from Honda, BSA, and Triumph. Despite a production date of January 1974 (per the VIN), the seller states that “most Ducati experts consider it a black case 1973 model”.
