08-04-2018 Update: Almost two years later, Tim Huber sees that this Motoplane is back up for sale. Find it here on Craigslist in Nevada City, Nevada for $16,000.
Post Listing Update: This Motoplane did not meet reserve despite 9 bids up to $12,600.
This bike is going to need a lot of work, but it’s rare enough for a feature. The Indian Motoplane was only built in 1933, and I’ve seen production numbers quoted at 400 – half of which were exported. After Indian discontinued the 101 Scout and replaced it with the Standard Scout, customers and dealers were disappointed. They wanted a lighter 45 cubic inch motorcycle, and Indian acquiesced with the Motoplane – the Scout’s 45 ci engine stuffed into the Scout Pony frame (originally built for a 30.5 ci motor). It’s one of the rarest Indians ever built.
This example (VIN: 633155) was possibly customized in California in the 50s (the seller’s wording is a little unclear). The heads are alloy versions from a newer bike. The bike is now leaking oil and the front exhaust valve is sticking.
