Post Sale Update; This Challenger quickly sold for the BIN of $1,000.
Based in Compton, California, the Powell Manufacturing Company was founded in 1926 by Hayward and Channing Powell. They started with radios but by the 30s they were building the scooters that they became best known for.
The Challenger is interesting for several reasons, one of which is that the seat is mounted to the engine! In ’48 the seat was resdesigned to become the gas tank as well. For several great examples of period Powell brochures, check out the US Scooter Museum – one of my favorites has to be this advertisement for Scooter Polo!
This example (VIN: S2281) has been sitting “forever” but it has a clean title and there are no back fees as it’s been on a non-op registration. This will obviously need a restoration, but the motor turns over and the body has minimal rust. The headlight, taillight lens, intake manifold, and carb are missing.
