Post Sale Update: This Citation sold for $8,900 after 24 bids on eBay.
The Zundapp Citation is an interesting motorcycle that started as a Horex Imperator. The latter’s 400cc engine had the displacement increased to 452cc, and it was then named after the Triple-Crown winning horse.
Marketed as a 500cc bike, the engine produced 40 horsepower. The Citation featured 8:1 compression and an overhead cam. Earles type forks, 18″ wheels, and a “guaranteed” 100mph were all par for the course. For more on the Citation (and to see what this bike could be like with after some work), check out this article from Cycle World.
This specific Zundapp Citation (VIN: NR 23 1266) is a barn find that will need a little bit of work. It’s claimed to be one of 380 Citations brought into the country by Berliner Motors of New Jersey. The motor turns over, and it includes plenty of the original tools. There’s a small dent in the headlight rim and mufflers, the latter of which have some rust. Again, this is a project, and while I typically try to avoid featuring projects – I doubt another Citation will be coming up for sale any time soon.
