Rare Project – 1987 Yamaha SDR200

In Japan, Small Displacement by AbhiLeave a Comment

Post Listing Update: This SDR200 did not meet reserve with 26 bids up to $2,550 on eBay in Torrance, California.

Though it was originally sold only in the Japanese Domestic Market, Yamaha’s SDR200 can now occasionally be found in Europe and the US thanks to the grey-market. Reminiscent of a tiny Ducati monster, the SDR features a distinctive trellis frame.

The SDR featured a two-stroke single cylinder engine with Yamaha’s YPVS technology. The 195cc engine was good for 34 horsepower, and the motorcycle had a 6-speed transmission. All of that came in a package that weighed just 253 pounds, enabling a claimed top speed of 99 miles per hour.

This example has an undisclosed 11-digit VIN so it’ll be just about impossible to get it registered in California, where it’s currently located. The seller said he cleaned the carb a couple of years ago and it “ran well” at that time, but now it’ll need a tune up. It doesn’t have any paperwork, either – this is going to require some effort, but I think it’ll be worth it!
