Monark was a Swedish motorcycle company that was established in 1908 and then merged into another company in 1961. They no longer make motorcycles, but they had some off-road competition success, including the 500cc World Championship in 1959. In 1970, the company released their first 125 motocross bike, which was available in a few variants – MX, T, and ISDT. Here’s one of the latter that will unfortunately need some work.
3,480 of the 125cc bikes were built, 1,100 of which were imported to the US. The MX model was available either as a MX, GS, or GS “Pro”, the Pro was designed for racing from the factory. The GS model had a 24 horsepower engine with the distinctive yellow paint scheme. Components included Girling shocks, Ceriani forks, and Akront rims, and a ’74 example of this bike would have cost $1,165. For more information on this interesting brand, check out Vintage Monark, easily one of the best marque-specific websites I’ve encountered.
This example (Frame: 5079) has been in storage for decades. It’s quite complete (just missing lights) and the transmission shifts through all gears, but the motor is stuck. It’s going ot take some work but I believe the project will be worth the effort. If you agree, find this Monark for sale (from the same seller as the OSSA Phantom from earlier this week) in Naples, Maine with bidding up to $1,795 and the reserve not yet met
