SWM started building the Rotax-powered TL320 in 1977. Incremental upgrades were put into play until the bike was killed off in 1984, but the highlight of the model run was right about when this specific bike was built – in 1981, Gilles Burgat won the FIM World Trials Championship. This example has been restored so you can do your best Burgat impression.
The Rotax motor was specifically built for trails purposes, with help from Sammy Miller and Charles Coutard. Acerbis supplied the plastic bodywork and Marzocchi initially took care of the suspension though by ’80 SWM had switched to Betor forks and Girling shocks. Between ’81 and ’82, SWM added black painted Grimeca hubs, restyled side panels, and different triple clamps. I’ve seen multiple sources (like this one) that said the ’82 bikes had blue frames to pay homage to Pernod, a French company that was sponsoring SWM. So maybe this bike is actually a late ’81 model?
Either way, this example was rebuilt by Al Roberts, who is probably known best for his Can-Am collection. It has new plastic fenders and side panels, rebuilt front forks, a relaced front wheel, as well as new cables, chain, seat cover, and grips. The engine also got plenty of new parts – Rotax rod kit, piston kit, clutch kit, crank bearings, transmission bearings, seals, and gaskets.
