After Can-Am ended up under the wing of Amstrong/CCM, they experimented with some different models. One of the rarer bikes was the CMT series, trials bikes that were available between 1983 and 1987 in varying displacements. Here’s one of the early examples, which was actually obtained by the original owner who won it through a raffle. Oddly enough, he didn’t really care about bikes so he rode it a few times and then let it sit, which is why this is now a bit of a project.
The CMT started production with a Hiro engine, but Hiro eventually went out of business and by 1985, Can-Am had switch to a Rotax powerplant. The ’83 introductory model got a 322cc piston port single that was ‘designed by Sammy Miller’, plus Marzocchi forks, Betork shocks, Akront rims, Pirelli tires, Amal carb, and more. Dry weight was 196 pounds. For more on the CMT 310, check out this profile on Canned Ham.
This example has just 431 miles on the odometer and is claimed to be 100% original – even the Pirelli tires. It’s missing the front brake cable and taillight lens. It was last started 7 years ago but during the listing the seller has freed up the motor and started it with starter fluid. I guess the project is now just a little bit smaller, then.
