By the time Ducati had released the Mark 3 Desmo, they had an impressive variety of trim levels. In ’71, they added to the line up with their first ever motocross bike (the R/T), and a street bike with silver fiberglass bodywork. Two Wheels Magazine in Australia called the latter the “Silver Shotgun”, and the nickname has stuck through the years.
It featured cafe-racer styling with clipons, rear sets, and the single seat. It also got component upgrades with Borrani wheels, a Grimeca front brake, and 35mm Marzocchi forks. But there were safety concerns about fiberglass tanks (which were eventually banned for road use in the US). Those tanks don’t dent, they rupture, and it opens up the possibility of gas leaking out and starting a fire after a crash.
This example is said to have been fully restored and it’s ready to go. Find this Silver Shotgun for sale in Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands with bidding up to $8,300 and the reserve not yet met (shipping to the US is approximately $1,500)
