Post Sale Update: After 29 bids on eBay, this Honda sold for $2,550.
When it was first released, the Honda GL500 basically sat in a class by itself – a full dress, middleweight tourer. Hell, I can’t think of something similar that’s available now – can you? I suspect bikes like the BMW F800ST or the Honda VFR800 come closest, but those are too sporty to be comparable to this baby Gold Wing. Like the Gold Wing, he Silver Wing was available as an Interstate model which came with the fairing, saddlebags, and trunk. This would almost be cute if it was a different color.
The GL500 used the 495cc V-Twin engine that most people associate with the CX500. It was good for 48 horsepower but the bike weighed a hefty 478 pounds dry. This bike was built only between ’81 and ’82 – the year after the Silver Wing got the 650cc engine from the CX650 and a year later they were off the market. The trunk replaces the back seat, though there are aftermarket solutions that let you mount the trunk further back.
This specific Honda GL500 is a one owner bike with just 1,705 miles. It’s had a recent service with rebuilt carbs, a new battery and new spark plugs. Though there’s a few small scratches, it’s claimed to look and run like new. I can’t help feeling like this would be a great quirky tourer for someone to explore the States on.
