Post Listing Update: Despite 17 bids up to $15,800, this Harley FX did not meet reserve.

Considered by some to be the first factory custom bike, the Harley-Davidson FX Super Glide was Willie G’s brainchild and an attempt to satisfy the countless H-D enthusiasts that would customize their brand new Harleys. Most people associate this bike with the “Sparkling America” paint job of red/white/blue, but this bike’s Sparkling Green color was a rare option.

Harley-Davidson FX Super Glide - Tank

Willie decided to build a production bike that offered custom looks – the “FX” title stands for Factory Experimental. Combining parts from the FLH and XL models, you also got buckhorn handlebars and the distinctive boattail fender. It had a MSRP of $2,500, and it did not sell well. As a ’71, this is a first year model of the FX Super Glide. Sales increased when the rear styling was changed, but I frankly like the way the boattail has aged. Then again, I’ve often been told I have no sense of style!

This specific Harley-Davidson FX Super Glide is being offered by the second owner – the first owner had it until just 18 months ago, and he received it as a high school graduation gift. Not bad. The seller says that the bike is all original except for the tires, though the original tires are included in the sale.
