The Z1 has typically been in the shadow of Honda’s CB750 – Kawi thought it was going to be first to market with a four cylinder 750cc sport bike and were unpleasantly surprised. Kawi decided that they would have to bump up displacement to 903cc before releasing it to the public. This example is in impressively original condition as it has been with the same family for four decades (over three of which were in climate controlled storage).
When the Z1 (also sold as the Z900 or 900 S4/Super Four in other markets) was introduced in 1972, it was the most powerful Japanese 4 stroke, 4 cylinder production bike ever sold. It also set records for 24 hour endurance racing and the press liked it a lot – MCN called it “Machine of the Year” every year between ’73 and ’76. 1974 saw the introduction of the Z1A, which got an aluminum engine finish, two color options, and many smaller tweaks.
