I’ve featured super single racers before, but it continues to mesmerize me how what once was a purpose built off-road machine can be converted into such a highly competent track weapon. Not only are these bikes solid racers, but they’re remarkably fun to pilot. With a weight around 250 lbs and the grunt of a single cylinder power plant, they offer an incredibly distinctive track experience. This particular example is noteworthy for several reasons, it’s been decked out with all kinds of trick top shelf components, it’s built around an ’09 CRF model – the year Honda started using fuel injection in the CRF450 – and collectively it would cost over $20k to reproduce this bike so it’s price being less than a third of that makes this a pretty sweet deal.
The suspension on this Honda has been swapped out for full Race Tech suspension, held in race track triple clamps. Larger capacity Fluidyne Powersports radiators were added to this example as well as a set of premium balanced Martini wheels that are currently wrapped in brand new Dunlop rubber with the stickers still on them (not shown in the pictures). Mini front and rear sprocket combinations have been added along with a Hinson clutch basket and cover. Top of the line Brembo brakes have also been fitted to the super single, with the front caliper being controlled via one of the adjustable ASV levers and Woodcraft lever guards mounted to the front end.
Adorning the kitted CRF’s bodywork is a Troy Lee Design paint job which simply looks awesome. A Power Commander with O2 sensor comes with the sale but hasn’t been installed yet. In the ad the seller also says he was “buying the components to put in a quick shifter this winter. All you need is the sensor for the shifter”, which means all the heavy lifting has been done for what would be another great addition to this build. The sale also includes front and rear stands and an extra set Dunlop rain tires.
In addition to boasting all kinds of smiles per hour, super singles – and this example in particular – are also some of the best dollar for dollar track weapons available. They also offer the benefit of re-conversion to their former dirt going setup, making for one machine that can competently tackle a variety of riding applications. One of said applications are the organized super 450 single racing leagues throughout the US (and almost certainly elsewhere around the world). Kits are available to convert 450’s into supersingles from companies like Beon, and Roland Sands has also made some really cool 450 super single racers. These are genuinely the kind of machines that remind me why I love motorcycles and track machines in particular.
