A barely-known German motorcycle manufacturer, Horex was founded in 1920 and then acquired in 1960 by Daimler-Benz, who ended bike production. The seller of this bike says that when he acquired it as part of a collection, he was told it was a “1954ish Factory Werks Horex twin overhead cam road racer”. Over time, he now says “the consensus belief is it is a Horex replica/tribute road racer.
This all came about when the clutch side cover was taken off and the seller saw “Made in Japan” on hte clutch basket. He guesses it’s a 250 or 350 and while the motor turns over, it has not been started during his ownership. The good news is that the previous owner was a retired US Navy pilot who imported it from Germany, then raced it in multiple AHRMA events. It’s got an original Horex frame and some period correct goodies. It’s an interesting dilemma – throw this in your garage as a show piece or bring it back to life as a racer that no one else will have?
