MotoTrek: Quality YouTube for ADV nerds
Because you can and should ride to more places than your local coffee shop.
By Kyle Hyatt
So, as some of you might know, I bought a big-ass (mid-sized) adventure bike and now I’m riding it daily in Los Angeles [Editor’s Note: More on this later!]. It’s my first bike and by far its the biggest thing I’ve ridden that wasn’t an actual horse. I’ve taken the MSF and I have a couple months of experience under my belt but there are a lot of skills that I was either never taught or just didn’t know I needed. As a certified old millennial, I went to YouTube to see if I could get some pointers from someone who wasn’t just a muscle-dummy yelling into his Sena and that’s how I ended up finding Bret Tkacs and his channel MotoTrek.
MotoTrek, in addition to having a delightful jazz drum soundtrack, is a well-shot and edited series of videos that help to teach valuable skills specifically targeted at ADV riders. Thanks to Bret, I’ve been practicing trying to really tightly U-Turn my bike. He’s also got a great series on so-called “Poser Skills” which are actually kinda useful and something I plan to practice more as I get more comfortable on the bike.
MotoTrek channel is a great resource and I’d like, rather selfishly, if Bret would make more videos so I can get skills for free. So, to that end, I would love if you guys would go and give his videos a look and maybe tell him he’s doing a good job, I’d appreciate it.
Full disclosure: I have never met or spoken to Bret, I just like what he does and I hope you do too!
