From reader Dave H comes a little anecdote about the late Doug Domokos, also known as “The Wheelie King“:
“If you’ve ever heard of “Wheelie King” Doug Domokos, he was from here in Niles, both of our home towns. Kawasaki sponsored him during 1980 (at least) he had the BIG “Water Buffalo”, and we used to play catch up thru city streets, here in Niles MI. I was on my ’80 Honda CB750F, so he had WAY more power than I & would come blasting past me, on a wheelie, quite frequently. In WAY previous years, we used to ride our MX bikes at “The Terminals”, which was a late 19th-early 20th century train terminal, by then with rails & most buildings gone. It consisted of a deep, maybe 30-40 feet, channel where the trains ran. He was the first, then we others started, to scream up to the edge, from above, & jump off from level ground above, & land WAY down on the flat below.”
Doug went on to do some crazy stuff, like lapping supercross tracks (whoops and jumps) while only on the rear wheel:
Wheelie-ing up Lombard Street:
And generally being impressive:
Doug also enjoyed ultralight aircraft and unfortunately passed away when he hit power lines in an ultralight in November of 2000.
