Post Sale Update: This R65LS sold for $4,999 after 19 bids on eBay.
Between 1983 and 1985, BMW built a limited edition of their R65. Called the R65LS, it featured a polarizing front fairing that probably makes the bike look faster than the bike actually was. I dig the 80s look…you may not. Whether or not you care for the original styling, I hope you appreciate how well this example has held up.
Functionally, there isn’t much difference between the BMW R65LS and the bike it’s based on. You still got the 50 horsepower boxer twin – the only mechanical difference was an upgrade to dual disc Brembos on the front wheel. The major cosmetic difference is obviously the front fairing. This example (VIN: 6370817) has just 2,520 miles and it’s in great shape for the age. The seller notes a couple of minor cosmetic flaws but there’s no rust and everything is claimed to work mechanically. There are some upgrades but the OEM options are included – Flanders handlebar, Michelin tires (yes, the originals are included), older BMW valve covers, bar end mirrors, and custom ammo cams with OEM luggage racks. The seller said that he found the bike after it had been stored in a California warehouse for 35 years, then had the motor went through by Bavarian Motorcycle Workshop in Salt Lake City. The sale includes the repair manual, owner’s manual, original parts, and a new OEM brake master cylinder.
