It’s been a long time coming (they were originally planning on a Summer 2014 release) but the San Diego company NUVIZ is making the most of their $5.4 million in funding and they’re about to start selling to the public. This week, I’ll be attending the launch and before I report back to you, I want to know if there’s anything specific you’d like to know.
I’ll be frank – I’m pretty conflicted about this one. The tech geek in me loves the idea of a HUD (because it’s cool). It includes a communication system (though I can’t see any mention about speakers on the website), camera, and a removable battery. I appreciate the last point as I could theoretically hot swap out on a long day in the saddle (battery life is said to be 8 hours). I think it’s smart that it’s an add-on system that you attach to your helmet of choice, instead of having to buy an entire helmet from a company you know nothing about. Plus, I love startups in the motorcycle space that are willing to take risks, and I want to support these kinds of developments. The cynical side of me remembers that I’ve never once felt like I needed something like this – then again, I felt the same way about heated grips and when I finally got a chance to try them, I fell in love.
From what I can tell per the NUVIZ site, the display will show you the time, your speed, caller ID, what music you’re listening to, or turn by turn navigation. The navigation is the only one that really interests me:
My big concerns? The first generation of almost any tech product is going to be large and expensive, but this costs $699 and some photos make this thing look huge:
So with all that said, what would you like me to tell you in my review once I’ve finally had a chance to try it out? Let me know and I’ll do my best to answer your questions in the upcoming article.
