Post Listing Update: This Suzuki XR69 tribute did not get any action at the asking BIN of $26,000.
Also known as the GS1000R, the Suzuki XR69 was born out of Pops Yoshimura’s request for Suzuki to help him with some development of his GS750-based Formula 750 racer. In 1977, F750 became Formula One and they allowed 1,000cc motors. Suzuki started using the GS1000 motor (good for 74 horsepower stock) but Pops was able to coax approximately 130 horsepower out of the powerplant and all of a sudden the frames were desperately inadequate. The XR69 was born, and the Yoshimura-Suzuki connection has continued on to this day. Here’s a semi-replica of the ’80 Suzuki XR69 that Wes Cooley campaigned as an endurance racer in Europe. The seller built it “for the sole purpose of racing the International Challenge at Phillip Island in Australia.” He competed with last year but now it’s time to find this wild Suzuki a new owner.
There’s an incredible amount of work here, and it impressively has dyno’d 171.5 horsepower at the rear wheel with 110 octane fuel. Higlights of the motor build include a displacement bump to 1,280cc, 39mm Keihin carbs, titanium intake valves, steel exhaust valves, hard face cams, extensive porting, and more. The seller claims that $6,000 has been spent in the head alone. Outside of the motor, this Suzuki features Dynatek ignition, Sigma slipper clutch, Barnett clutch plates, custom chromoly frame, Hindle exhaust, Ohlins shock, and EBC rotors/pads. Go represent Team USA next January!
